Week 26: A Series Of Purposeful Retouches

As it goes, we have come across a new week and I have created a new portrait using natural light, but decided to go a different route in the way of motivation and purpose for it.

It is no big secret that outside of beauty shots, I am opposed to makeup like Superman hates kryptonite. I love to play and experiment, but I do not believe that the makeup I apply changes the beauty that is me, and in an effort to work on the other, really important side, of portrait photography, I decided to work on my retouching skills over my my pre-shoot set-up and appliance application techniques.

For this shot, I decided to use the same window from last week (and why not, I spend so much time at work anyway). Since I am here at the golden hour and my window faces the sunrise, it is a perfect venue for a shot.

Once I got the RAW image in PS, it was time for the real work to begin….

Currently, I am working on a video, which will serve as my other 52-Project for the week since the techniques were vast – experimental to tried and true.

So, without further ado, here is my very simple portrait shot for Week 26 of this portraiture project that is completely retouched to become the portrait I wanted it to be.

The rules I have laid out are simple – 1) these portraits can be of myself or another model, but cannot be the same image as my other project; 2) There must be a lighting element – whether my studio lights or a consciously planned shoot using natural lighting from the golden hour, etc. The key being consciously planned – no “on a whim”, point the camera at someone and call it complete. These will be portraits per the definition:

por·trait
/ˈpôrtrət/

Noun

1. A painting, drawing, photograph, or engraving of a person.
2. A representation or impression of someone or something in language or on film.

Synonyms
picture – likeness – portraiture – portrayal – effigy

My goal is to expand my portraiture abilities and processing as well as direction I give others while also working on my creative muscles and my own personal style, which I believe to be shooting what I like to see!

Hybrid

Hybrid

Here I begin to fail the steps of a battle without sense
Nearly began to understand as I’ve grown my way
There is no light out of all the places
There is no sign of our help
There is no time and a chance of relations
What if I choose to live?

Living in a dangerous womb
Its like falling every moment, every stage
Living in my own little world
Outcoming every sequence of this dream.

How did this begin and turned in such inhumanity?
I’m hoping for myself to escape the insanity, I’m open
What if I choose to live and what if I killed you?
Inhumanity, inhumanity…

There is no light out of all the places
There is no sign of our help
There is no time and a chance of relations
What if I choose you?
How did this begin and turned in such inhumanity?
I’m hoping for myself to escape the insanity, I’m open
What if I choose to live and what if I killed you?

Inhumanity, inhumanity, inhumanity….

A Balance Between Darkness And Light

A Balance Between Darkness And Light

An image and poem by Shantha Marie Fountain

We all have demons,
shrouded in shadow and light.
The way of happiness and contentment;
balance.

There is not always a set of absolutes,
never a right or wrong;
in being.
Balancing your demons through the darkness and brightness;
living.

Trust in the self,
trust in the love and life around you.
Finding inner peace is about looking inward to the self;
projecting it in everything you do.

Find light, experience joy;
Find darkness, experience hate.
Chose what you want to find, and experience a life;
worth living.

Week 25: More Than Meets The Eye

Not Another 52 Project?!?!?!

Week 25: More Than Meets The Eye

Another week, another staged portrait shot composed through the use of natural lighting since last week was full of strobes and flashes.

This week, it was important to shed some of the stress from school, finals, and postings for school by working with tutorials of a completely different nature.  I listened in on some MOOC courses while preparing new projects at work and closing out old ones, and I really beefed up my NAPP course time as well.

In order to do that, before I set-up for work, I used the natural light pouring into my office for these shots.

Once I took a few test shots, I knew exactly how I wanted to shoot this one – I wanted the eye gazing out to so much more because just like me, there is so much more to me than the sum of my parts.

So, without further ado, here is my very simple partial portrait shot for Week 25 of this portraiture project in honor of finishing off the school term, starting a new term at work, and continuously learning just because I want to!

Before to After

Before to After

This past two months I have been wicked busy with school and whatnot, and unfortunately missed putting a lot of time and energy into the May/June+Photography+ Project, which had an industrial theme.

I only ever made 1 shot and didn’t get a chance to really mess with it much until a week ago.

For me, the minute I heard the word industrial, I immediately thought Skinny PuppyMinistryFront 242,KMFDM and all those other amazing industrial bands from my rockin’ youth.

While I used a separate rendition for a Selfy Sunday Project, this was the work I had “in progress” that I just didn’t have perfected during the time of the hang-outs.

Enjoy!

Learning Is How Creativity Is Born

52-Week Self Portrait Project | 52/48

Learning Is How Creativity Is Born

“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things.” – Steve Jobs

So, experiences, explanations, and education go hand-in-hand.  I think a lot of my creativity comes from absorbing and learning from everyone around me (and of course school).

For this image, which I shot this morning in a big old fat naturally lit window, I looked back to some of the things I learned from +Scott Kelby‘s training videos I sometimes listen to while doing homework or whatnot.  I used to be so mystified by how designers created things because I had it built up to be so insanely difficult, I was just too “uncool” to follow.

Many years and experiences later, I see that it was about learning the tools, principles, and tricks of the trade.  Now, what used to be an enigma makes logical sense to me.

That being said, I know I still have so much to learn, but that will not hinder my enthusiasm to continue creating and practicing and honing my skills as an artist and designer for years to come.

So, for Week 48 out of 52 (one more month – 4 more shots), I decided to let some of my creativity for digital retouching and also designing and conceptualizing on with Photoshop influence this week’s work; my focus was on  #morethansnappingapic and#retouchingthesoul .
