Love, Revelation, and Everything In-Between

“Some photographers take reality… and impose the domination of their own thought and spirit. Others come before reality more tenderly and a photograph to them is an instrument of love and revelation.” – Ansel Adams

If there is one thing about taking pictures of someone else that brings me the most joy, it is creating a portrait that captures the inner person – that personality that you can see through conversation, deeds, and actions.

Today, I was working on practicing my lighting set-up for split, loop, Rembrandt, butterfly, broad, and short lighting.  My wonderful boyfriend +Robert Hacker said that he would be my victim subject so I didn’t have to keep running back and forth from behind and in front of the camera.  I am not going to lie, it is SO MUCH EASIER to just stand behind the camera! =D

What I love about this so much is that I was able to break the nerves down a bit to show a genuine expression.  Granted, it did take a few laughing sessions because I was getting him positioned and I would make fart noises just before I took a few shots to get him to lighten up a bit.

He is a great model despite HATING being in front of my camera; which I hope to one day break him of.

I figured that after he had been such a good sport about everything, that I would snap a few extra “BW-specific” shots to go along with my 2014 goals.  To tell the truth, I don’t get a lot of practice shooting and editing male subjects, so this was a nice challenge to work at.  It isn’t often that I can get away with this sort of drama in a beauty shot; I was pretty stoked to do it, though!

I hope you enjoy! ♥
